Food Adventures #1
One of the great joys of living in a major city is dining at a variety of establishments. In exchange for the multicultural cuisines available to us, we export diabetes and hypertension via fast food conglomerates to the rest of the world. I clearly can't help those poor souls, but damn if I haven't been eating like a king lately. Here are three places in Brooklyn's Chinatown, 8th ave.
#1 Asian Bakery
Scallion hot dog + egg custard tart + fried wontons
I could start out every day like this. Reminiscent of Waffle House with Asian food and baked goods, these snacks were deliciously light and filling at the same time. Topped off with a cool mango green tea from Tbaar and I could have called it a day. Cya tomorrow, where else could this day possibly go. I've lived enough days now to know that days rarely get this good. Next time Ima hit up a few pineapple buns and fried water chestnut cakes.
#2 Japanese Crepes S&N
Crepes are a food concept in every culture. Throw some flour and water together and spread in a circular motion on a hot pan. Pancakes, injera, and, a staple of any proper south indian growing up, dosas. And then bump it up to the next level with a filling. Or if you're this Japanese store - with all the fillings. Chicken, crab, shrimp, beef, special sauce, cucumber, sesame, tofu, red pepper. Run down the street screaming I'M ON A NEW LEVEL after.
#3 Viiza
Crepes aren't the only edible cone-shaped delicacy on 8th ave. Pizza cones have tragically not entered the national conversation soon enough. An innovation in standard American fare that allows a touch more portability a la the crunchwrap from the Holiest of fast food restaurants, Taco Bell. The real revolution here though is the conservation of heat keeping the cheese inside gooey and toppings warm. The crust encompassing the length of the cone adds a pleasant crunch to every bite. Calzones are a chore, regular slices - old news, get yourself a cone.
Actually, the main reason people go into this spot is for another cheap novelty. They put their tea drinks in lightbulb-shaped clear plastic containers. That's all. And people think this is mad cool and take pics to show their friends how their life is filled with mad cool moments.
Speaking of which, here's a mad cool moment from my life yo!
